The Friday before last, I noticed a cart in the warehouse labeled "DO NOT STOCK." I glanced at it and noticed a few dozen bottles of something but couldn't investigate further. Then later I was in the breakroom eating lunch when Jenny came in, and as usual she reached into the fridge for her drink. "What's that?" I asked, as she pulled this shiny blue metal bottle out of the fridge.

She took a swig and sighed. "It's Redline, that new energy drink we just got? It's AWESOME! I stocked, like, thirty totes this morning! And I only drank half of it!"

"Dear god. Is that the stuff from the cart? What is it? What's IN it?" So she handed it to me and offered me a sip. I declined, but turned to the supplement facts. "So why aren't we stocking it?"

And she told me that she'd put it aside because she didn't know whether our store manager Brenda would want us to sell it. Or, if Brenda wants us to sell it, that maybe we should consider putting it in the locked case instead of the shelf, since it's got the "not for use for children under 18" warning.

As I read the label I kinda understood why we had them in the back; the stuff had a long list of potent ingredients like 5-HTP (which most people take to boost serotonin, like an antidepressant), Yohimbe (most often seen in male libido formulas), normal fat burner stuff like green tea and yerba mate, Evodiamine which is supposed to be a thermogenic, and a bunch of other stuff including anhydrous caffeine.

There's also a scary warning disclaimer longer than my livejournal profile, warning people that they shouldn't drink it if they're over 15 lbs overweight, even though the label claims it's a "fat incinerator" or some such nonsense. This stuff claims to work by evoking a "shivering" response. Uh, sure.

As the day went on, the legend of the Redline spread. Toby tried a sip of Jenny's and felt weird instantaneously. But in a good way. She put a few aside to buy for her and her husband. Laura also put one aside to take home. Assistant manager M bought one and drank it. Slowly the two-dozen in the cart dwindled, and on Sunday when I came in to work there was nothing in the cart at all! I saw M hand the last bottle to a male friend who came in that morning, and she bought it for him with her discount. (I'm sure the male was her brother, as per company discount policy.)

"Friends don't let friends drink Redline," I joked.

Then later I was talking to Laura about the Redline and she said, "That stuff is CRAZY. I brought a bottle home, and I gave it to my husband. He took one drink and he yelled, 'You have to get some more of these! Buy 'em all!'" She didn't buy them all, but she did get six more to take home. Which, at that point, was probably among the few we had left in the warehouse.

I haven't heard about the fate of Redline, but you know, if my manager decides not to sell these, I suspect she will be missing out on some serious profits. If an energy drink is amazing enough to get half of my coworkers scrambling for it, surely it will be enough to get some repeat customers from the gym next door. Of course there's nothing to stock anymore since we finished off a couple of cases, but maybe once we get another shipment, customers will get a chance to try it.
